김동연 경기도지사는 크리스토퍼 라니브(Christopher LaNeve) 신임 미8군사령관을 만나 “경기도와 미8군간 상호협력을 강화하고 도내 주한미군의 안정적 정착 지원을 위해 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

그는 이어 “최근 한반도에서 긴장이 고조되는 상황에 우려하고 있고, 북한과 접경한 경기도지사로서 여러가지 대처를 하고 있다” 며 “한·미동맹은 대한민국의 외교전략에 가장 중심되는 축이다. 미8군의 역할에 깊이 감사드리고, 앞으로 한반도와 동·북아 평화를 위해 계속 노력해 달라”고 요청했다.

"I am concerned about the recent escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and I am dealing with various measures as the governor of Gyeonggi Province bordering North Korea," he said. "The South Korea-U.S. alliance is the most central axis in South Korea's diplomatic strategy. We deeply appreciate the role of the Eighth U.S. Army, and we ask you to continue your efforts for peace on the Korean Peninsula and East and North Asia."

이에 크리스토퍼 라니브 사령관은 “미8군을 대표해 경기도의 지원과 따뜻한 환영에 감사드린다” 며 “지역사회 일원이 된 것 같은 느낌이다. 앞으로도 함께할 시간을 기대한다”고 답했다.

미국 애리조나 주립대 졸업 뒤 1990년 임관했으며 미 육군 제82공수사단장, 육군 전력사령부 작전참모부장 등을 역임했다.

After graduating from Arizona State University, he was commissioned in 1990 and served as the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army and the chief of operational staff at the Army Power Command.

경기도는 매년 주한미군 관계자들간 소통·협력 강화와 정보공유를 위해 정책토론회를 개최하고 있다.

Gyeonggi Province holds policy discussions every year to strengthen communication and cooperation among U.S. Forces Korea officials and share information.

도내 미군 장병들과 가족들의 지역사회 적응을 돕기 위해 한국어·역사·문화 교육, 안보‧문화 체험을 비롯한 다양한 한·미교류협력사업도 추진하고 있다.

한편 김동연 경기도지사는 2023년 4월 수원 KT위즈파크에서 열린 프로야구 개막전에 골드버그(Philip S. Goldberg) 주한미국대사와 당시 윌러드 벌러슨(Willard M. Burleson III) 미8군사령관을 초청해 함께 관람하는 등 교류했다.
